What You'll Learn

1. Identify key coordination areas that impact mass timber success from the general contractor’s perspective.

2. Understand how design discipline overlaps affect shop drawings, procurement, and field installability.

3. Gain insights into navigating project delivery through design, permitting, and execution in a mass timber context.

Mass timber success isn’t just about great design—it’s about coordinating across disciplines, managing procurement timelines, and ensuring installation in the field. In this session, Dean Lewis of Skanska USA shares his boots-on-the-ground knowledge from over a decade of pushing the boundaries of prefab and timber construction across the U.S. Drawing on real-world experience with some of the first CLT, MPP, and Type IVC projects in the country, Dean will break down what GCs need to know to drive project success. Attendees will walk away with a clearer understanding of the design-to-execution pipeline, where pitfalls occur, and how prefab systems and design decisions intersect with permitting, subcontractors, and install crews.

Skanska video: Portland International Airport

In a joint venture, Skanska is providing CM/GC services for the 860,000-SF modernization to ensure sufficient capacity for future passenger demand, world-class customer experience and airport flexibility. The complete remodel of the Terminal Core includes the installation of a new 9-acre, large-span, mass timber roofing system over the entire terminal core complex, building a 150-foot multifloor addition between Concourses C and D and adding new pre- and post-security concessions. The renovated passenger entry terminal will double the size of the current ticketing and lobby area. The scope of work also includes seismic resiliency upgrades and replacement of aging systems and infrastructure. All construction is being phased to maintain continuous 24/7 operations and uninterrupted service. The project is targeting LEED Gold certification.
