Ricardo Brites, PhD, is the Director of Engineering & VDC at Mercer Mass Timber.
He is a seasoned Structural Engineer with nearly 20 years of expertise in the holistic Design for Manufacture and Assembly (DfMA) of Mass Timber structures across Europe and North America.
With a portfolio of over 100 completed projects, he specializes in structural design aligned with both European and North American standards.
During his tenure in the UK, Ricardo served as an Associate at Eurban Limited, where he played a key role in delivering award-winning mass timber projects, including the world’s largest mass timber structure in Singapore and two recipients of the UK’s prestigious RIBA Stirling Prize. Ricardo is a graduate member of the Institution of Structural Engineers (IStructE) and holds professional membership with the Portuguese Engineers Association (Ordem dos Engenheiros).
Since relocating to Canada in 2019, Ricardo has contributed to leading firms such as Katerra’s Equilibrium Group and Aspect Structural Engineers before joining Mercer Mass Timber in May 2022 to lead the Engineering & VDC group.
At Mercer, he has been involved in over $100M USD of mass timber projects across North America, including marquee developments such as the Theodore Roosevelt Library in Medora, ND, and the Walmart Campus in Bentonville, AR.
